This sounds like a good solution, since MATE is the gnome we all knew, and the 
Gnome of today is a different beast entirely (though it gets to keep the name).

There are alot of those from a certain crowd. 
They use the carrot and the stick approach.
The proper free/open approach is just the carrot and let people decide and 
respect them.
Not cattle pen them and run them to wherever one wishes.
