JFTR, I very much agree with your (lintian folks) approach in general, as well as with points 1, 2, and 4 of [1] in particular. 1. http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2010/03/msg00821.html (I don't plan to resist the switch, I just didn't do so yet because of lack of time, no immediate benefits, and some minor annoyances instead, like #572526.)
