I'm not forcing the use of the VCS, more like some infrastructure to host packages if you want, during the development, so that it's easier to track, and not in its source-only form as what matters to users is actually the binary form. Which is missing nowadays. And I disagree, we may lose a few, but it can improve efficiency making it a stable operation, and I think having more standardized ways to look at packages and contribute to the packaging will lower the entry to help.
