My point is that the opposite: Joey (being the author of both etckeeper 
and mr) quite possibly chose for etckeeper to use optimized (as opposed 
to generic) backends.

But feel free to file a bugreport (perhaps even with patch) against 
etckeeper to have it support mr as backend.
