While attending todays Edubuntu IRC meeting, I got a tip for an alternative for italc and controlaula that look interesting.
Check out <URL: http://www.epoptes.org/ > to see it. It was written by someone tired of italc crashing (50% of the time, according to alkisg on IRC), and is said to have active maintenance on Linux. It was said that italc work on both Windows and Linux, but is not maintained on Linux for a long time making logout/reboot/shutdown not work on Linux for years.
