looks like /etc/rcS.d/S18eeepc-acpi-scripts is run.  is there a way to
know that the overclocking factor currently is?

directory /sys/devices/platform/eeepc does not exist, but there is
directory

ls /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/ondemand/
ignore_nice_load   sampling_rate      sampling_rate_min  
powersave_bias     sampling_rate_max  up_threshold
