Also RedBoot does a lot of that and is actually part of the Debian 'ecos' package (RedBoot can be built out of the box from a vanilla eCos package). I am uncertain how (un)recent the Debian (woody) eCos package was synchronized with the fast moving eCos/RedBoot tree. Maybe for that reason, the idea of obtaining the bootloader from a Debian stable package might not be the best idea. Or conversely, should we invest effort in regular updates of these packages, in close sync with the upstream development? I read a discussion of hundreds of boards to be supported, but I see that u-boot, RedBoot, linuxppc-embedded, arm-linux, ... are able to support many boards and platforms in one monolythic tree (and some specific patches for certain ARM and XScale platforms).
