Parallel install of gnome's 1 and 2?

I've read posts on this list saying that parallel installs of gnome's 1 
and 2 are possible in debian, yet I don't see how, when the gnome2 
packages in experimental conflict with the gnome1 packages.  (For 
instance, gnome-panel2 conflicts with gnome-panel).

Is there *really* a way to simultaneously install the debian gnome1 
packages and the gnome2 packages?
