Yep, you're right Christian. Searching on google groups and nvidia's forums, I can see loads of reports of people having problems with gnome2 + latest nvidia. It seems downgrading to 3123-4 does the trick, or using nv. Obviously this is nvidia's issue, I hope a new driver release is soon - the newer drivers were a heck of a lot faster with 3D.
