In every mail list the really dumba question must fall..... So I take the responsibility to provide that:
I worked mightly to add sounds to Gnome2. It was not hard, I found I had the wrong kernel config, I picked Esonique when the sound card is Maestro2E.
How'er, the sounds work perfect if I sign into Gnome2 as root, but not as me.
I can run the machine as root, it is a single user laptop, but REALLY don't like the crap I can do to myself accidentlly ("don't take the name root in vain").
When I login as root, I get the sounds as expected. When I login as normal user, and open the volume control applet, it complains that a device is missing.
Obviously a simple, subtle, thing is hosing me here.
Thanks in advance for letting me know what the err in my ways is.
