I haven't gotten around to try much of it yet (Sven, you said you were going to build for powerpc? :), but I couldn't wait for the face browser in the graphical gdm greeter, so I whipped up a 2.4.4.0 package. Basically works here, beware that both greeters crash with the face browser enabled if a passwd entry contains non-UTF-8 characters.
