Hi Luis,
Thanks for the info. I have tried reinstalling fontconfig to no avail. Could you give more explanation about what you mean by downgrading to Xfree86? Do you mean downgrading xserver-xfree86 to stable or xserver-common or xfree86-common? I have all 3 installed and it looks like testing and unstable have the same version--4.2.1.
Thanks, William
Sorry that I wasn't too explicit; kind of in a rush encoding Finding Nemo here :-)
Yeah, downgrading the xserver-xfree86 4.2.1 does the trick. I'm using the one from Unstable. Note that you will have to hunt all X-related binaries also: xutils, xlibs, etc... In fact, anything that has a 4.3.x version. I usually do that with "aptitude" though nowadays you can savely use Synaptic-debtags :-)
I guess "dpkg --list | grep 4.3" can give you hints on what to downgrade.
I have (knoppix 3.3 originally... then debianized further...):
ii ttf-xfree86-no 4.2.1-2 non-free TrueType fonts from XFree86
ii xbase-clients 4.2.1-14 miscellaneous X clients
