Well, I'd expect that since gentoo are likely using palo as well to generate the LIF-like image for the ISO.
Sounds like 7x0 firmware wants more on the LIF-like image than palo is generating. Not sure we'll be able to fix that. You might try some of the older images (Debian 3.0r0) just to see if that was a recently introduced bug.
We installed our 720 from CD without any problem, AFAICR.
The only alternative I can suggest is attempting to net boot/install. There are "lifimage" files available that can be fed via rbootp (IIRC) to the 7x0 workstation. Perhaps someone else can suggest a HOW-TO for setting that up.
