Thank you for the quick answer. The problem persists, though. Just after sending the letter (of course: after) I searched -- not just browsed -- the archives, and found comments on the exact same prolem. It suggested getting the new .deb-s. I did get. And a new problem appeared. I do not even reach "Hurd server bootstratp", but get a message like this:
panic: Cannot load user-bootstrap image: error code 6000 after hitting anything it says: Kernel page fault at address 0x0, eip=0x11a932 .... [the last line:] panic: trap It waits for some seconds and than reboots. I used my nearest mirror at mlf.linux.rulez.org (Hungary) and hurd_19991022.deb with a timestamp of 23 October The machine succefully runs Debian Linux 2.1 with kernel 2.2.10 in its spare time.
