It couldn't be grub since I was already using the 0.5.95 boot floppy for some time, and it could always boot the "old" hurd successfully. At the moment I have the following in my /boot directory: gnumach_1.2-2.gz gnumach_1.2-5.gz serverboot_20000130.gz serverboot_20000803.gz When I use gnumach_1.2-2, everything boots perfectly, using either serverboot_20000130.gz or serverboot_20000803.gz. Since the serverboot.gz file comes from the hurd deb, running newer hurd servers on top of an "old" gnumach seems to be no problem. When I use gnumach_1.2-5, I get the "Root device `sd2s2' does not exist" error, also independent of which version of serverboot.gz is used. Single- or multi-user mode doesn't make any difference either. Specifically, I get the following boot messages (at the end, the first part scrolls away to quickly, any way to log that?): Partition check (DOS partitions): sd0: sd0s1 sd1: sd1s1 sd1s2 sd1s3 sd1s4 sd2: sd2s1 sd2s2 sd3: sd3s4 com0: at atbus0, port = 3f8, spl = 6, pic = 4. (DOS COM 1) com1: at atbus1, port = 2f8, spl = 6, pic = 3. (DOS COM 2) Root device `sd2s2' does not exist! Root device name? [sd2s2] Note how the partition check works OK. Is the "Root device name?" question handled by gnumach or by serverboot? For the time being, I'll just keep using a copy of gnumach_1.2-2, since all my hardware works properly with it. I can upgrade other components using dselect without much problems. I've also tried installing from scratch with the new gnu-20000913.tar.gz file, but since that comes with gnumach_1.2-5, I'm getting the same error.
