The cdrom was recognised as hd2 despite being the only other ide drive in the machine. Primary drive on the second ide controler. I am now happy. The installation cd is small. There are 130 K of packages. Does this seem about right? All the packages are in binary-hurd-i386 with no symlinks to binary-all. All that remains to be done is to link the butchered boot-floppies and debian-cd and then it will be ready to drop in the latest stable tarball.
