Update. An iso image built with "mkisofs -r -a " is a considerable improvement. It does not always lock up or crash with x-system.sh, only sometimes. The previous builds used "mkhybrid -J -r -T -a"
-x does not get a chance to work when running the offending file. As reported previously, a "loop" (is the Hurd the same as Linux here?) mounted image works perfectly.
