In xemacs, M-x select-input-method and type japanese-canna or (setq default-input-method 'japanese-canna) in .emacs if you use canna. If you want to use wnn, then type japanese-egg-wnn instead of japanese-canna. When you want to input japanese, type C-\ in order to toggle input modes. In addition, xemacs support XIM, so you can use the feature, too :) --
