Does the Voodoo Banshee driver have the RENDER extension
implemented? I'd guess that that would be the cause and since
the potato version of libqt2 is compiled without support for
anti-aliasing, it works.
But this is just a wild guess from my part. To see if that is
indeed the cause, upgrade again the packages and try to set
the QT_XFT variable to 0 (or false?) in your environment and
then use startx.
