I found the solution from a comment on the kde-user list, if anyone else has the same problem. I had some .fon files and a .ini in my truetype font directory. When I deleted everything but the .ttf files plus fonts.dir and fonts.scale, everything started working. -- Mike Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED]
