Everything you write is rather an argument that you and other people who want software compiled for a higher baseline work on getting the amd64v3 architecture variant from Ubuntu also to Debian. Advantages compared to your proposal: - less work, since Ubuntu already supports it - doesn't drop hardware support - baseline of the optimized variant can be set rather high Intel will enable AVX-512 again in their latest CPUs later this year, with this architecture variant approach you could even create an amd64v4 variant with good support for the AMD and Intel CPUs people will buy next year - without having to worry about the fact that this won't support the Intel CPUs you can buy today. > /Simon >... cu Adrian
