My current laptop is x86-64-v2 (Dell e6230), it's still in use in the wild. (My netbook was v1 but the cmos battery died.)
I'm very sorry to bring up this old thread again, but there is now a very good argument for keeping the baseline of the amd64 port at x86_64-v1, namely CERN. They just started migrating their laboratory PCs away from RHEL to Debian because of the baseline switch in RHEL 9 and 10. They cannot just simply replace the hardware without making larger investments.
I also note that patent expiration allows open hardware cloning. (The existence of the previous products as "prior art" vastly simplifies the patent defense against trolls. "We made something compatible with this existing implementation, upon which all patents have timed out, here's the relevant documentation attached to our motion to dismiss.")
Linux has a history of people who work for hardware companies pushing to drop support for hardware right as it goes out of patent...
