Thanks, Oleg, that has made a bit of difference.

I did:
hdparm -d0 /dev/cdrw
in a root terminal

and it responded with:
/dev/cdrw:
  setting using_dma to 0 (off)
  HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
  using_dma    =  0 (off)


I then proceeded as before. Wodim hung as before, but then everything unfroze when I pressed the eject button on the cdrw drive. It still did not write, nor eject, but I have got a message from Wodim indicating that it is not recognising the blank disk.
