I take it we're too late? :) Searching upstream (dir.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel), I see no mention of s4_nohwsig in connection with the term "Thinkpad" or "X40". So it is possible upstream does not know about this; if you know of anyone with access to the hardware, it might be worth pursuing that.
