No problem for the delay :)
I recently installed Squeeze on two other Thinkpad X40 and suspend to
disk worked fine, but their model number was different (2371H4G). I
guess the bug could be closed but, if you can wait a few weeks, I should
be able to get a hold on the original computer and check if the kernel
option is still necessary for this particular model.
