Problems trying out X

Hi--

I have installed Debian 2.2(I believe) on a compaq 4/75 CX laptop. But X
doesn't open up. I have the following questions, is there a utility that
allows me to test whether there are video drivers to work with the
laptop's display?? can someone let me know please!!!
