You could check out Coda. http://www.coda.cs.cmu.edu. I haven't tried it myself (yet), and there's no debian packages that I know of,but the client modifications are in the standard kernel and it sounds very interesting. To cite their website: "Coda is a distributed filesystem with its origin in AFS2" and "disconnected operation for mobile computing"....
