I would think so too, but alas it didn't. Nevermind I have it running now, after building the config file by hand, using the chipset recommended by xf86cfg. So I am a happy camper now `;-) > "no screens found" means... > when initialization was done and the first X client was about to > launch, there's no display available to talk to. > > It *usually* means all your modelines were out of spec (even the "default" > ones that X makes up for VESA compliance) or some other illegal combination > led to no screens being safe to use. Aha, that could explain it. There were modelines in the original config file. After reading the manpage I saw that in XFree86 4 it will use standard VESA settings if you don't specify modes yourself. That's just what I did (hence the remark about polishing the config in my previous message) and that gave me at least some useable result. From there on it was a bit of an iteration process. > 'Twas said there were a lot of (II) messages. Some of them may have been > details about the monitor? If I don't forget and your still interested I'll post it when I get my laptop back again. At the moment I lend it to a friend of mine. Thanks for taking the time to try and explain all this stuff to me. Grx HdV -- Support bacteria - they're the only culture some people have.
