Yep. The GPL was designed for compiled programs, and it shows in
several places.

No, not at all. One important difference is that a program in source form is easily understood by a human; in object form, it is not.

That's one of the big reasons we get to argue over preferred form of an image. It's pretty clear in almost every case what the preferred form of a program is; in images, it is much less so.
