Would it be beneficial if Debian joined OIN? The Open Invention Network
licenses patents to promote the Linux ecosystem.

It's not clear how much a membership would cost though.
Groklaw mentions that the 882 Novell patents would be covered by OIN
membership if it were taken out before the closing date of the sale
transferring them to Microsoft:
