THE HISTORY OF ST. PATRICK'S DAY

St. Patrick's Day is celebrated every March 17th in honour of the patron saint 
of Ireland, Saint Patrick. Though originally a Catholic holy day, it has now 
evolved into more of a secular holiday. It's also widely known as a "drinking 
holiday" across North America, marking it as one of the busiest days of the 
year for bars and restaurants.

As widely known as Saint Patrick is, information about his life is vague and 
full of legends; still, there are some elements of his story that most scholars 
accept to be true. Born in the Roman British Isles during the latter half of 
the 4th century AD, Patrick was later kidnapped by pirates as a teenager and 
sold into slavery in Ireland. While working as a shepherd, he turned to 
religion for solace and after six years, escaped the Irish coast for his home 
in Britain. Once home, however, he decided to become a priest and return to
