THE HISTORY OF VICTORIA DAY Your Retirement By: Brandee Musiala Born on May 24, 1819, Queen Victoria is our youngest reigning monarch taking the throne at just 18 years old after the death of William IV. Her birthday was first declared a holiday in 1845 and a national holiday in 1901 following her death. The only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Victoria married her first cousin, Prince Albert, in 1840. Because she was Queen, Victoria actually had to propose to Albert. They had nine children before Prince Albert died of typhoid fever in 1861. After his passing, Queen Victoria withdrew from the public and went into a long period of mourning. Aside from celebrating her 60-year reign, she spent the rest of her life wearing black.
