You can work on Salsa and once you're happy with your changes, you can ping the present mailing list to issue a request for sponsorship; this does not have to be as formal as using the mentors' website, an email to the list will do. This is the team's practice when contributors without upload rights wish to bring some changes to Debian Med packages (thinking of it, actually, I have never worked with the mentors' website).
