I hope these Debian build system issues aren't too overwhelming. I wish

Hmm, well I don't know all the steps that are necessary to address the
"error messages" from the build system that are below. It seems there
is much out of date software that needs updating. I have subscribed to
the debian-mentors list and they are very helpful. You might try asking
there for a better answer. I'll do what I can to help, but I am not
real clear on what is required from here either except in these general
terms.
