Please mention in the changelog that you switched the compression method. debian/copyright says the library is licensed as GPL-2+, but the files in the upstream tarball only include a header stating "This file may be redistributed and modified only under the terms of the GNU General Public License (See COPYING for details)" and the GPL-2 in COPYING.
