The R10000 has a weird brokenness on non-I/O-coherent machines which prevents reliable operation without a workaround in the kernel/the compiler for the kernel. IOW, glaurung's kernel won't work reliable (but survives surprisingly long, I heard). Peter Fuerst works upstream on the same problem, but on a Indigo2 R10000, so there's some progress in this area.
