Thanks for the pointer. Indeed the problem has nothing to do with pbuilder, except that it's using binutils 2.21 from sid, while my debuild used binutils 2.20. This file ---- let f x = x *. 1.0 ---- produces amd64 assembly code that is rejected by "as" from binutils 2.21.0.20110302.
