I was able to fix this problem; a patch is attached to the issue report in
http://caml.inria.fr/mantis/view.php?id=5237
I only did a full test on 3.12.0, but the patch also applies cleanly to 3.11.2.
I think it should be applied in the Debian version of 3.12.0.
Depending on the timing of the transition, perhaps a new version of
3.11.2, either with the patch or with a conflict on binutils (>= 2.21),
should be considered.
