A further comment (from Paul Jarc): The FHS says: "The /usr/local hierarchy is for use by the system administrator when installing software locally. It needs to be safe from being overwritten when the system software is updated." It doesn't say anything about whether the software installed in /usr/local comes from the same distributor as the OS. Imagine a patch to dpkg where any file with a prefix mentioned in /etc/dpkg/protected would not be overwritten unless it already is mentioned in dpkg's configuration database. Thanks, -- Raul
