Roger, I came across this thread on May 20th when I was trying to install Debian 2.2r6 on my Wallstreet PowerBook G3, Family Number M4753. I was also stuck with X and it would error out. Since I wanted to run the stable version of Debian, I did not attempt to upgrade to testing/unstable. I read an old 1999 thread stating that Yellowdog Linux worked fine on a Wallstreet. So I downloaded the Yellow dog Linux 1.2 from ftp://planetmirror.com.au/pub/yellowdog/iso/ydl-cs-1.2.1-install.iso and installed it on the Wallstreet. I could not get the mouse to work, so I took the mouse device /dev/input/mouse0 from Debian and put it into Yellowdog. Once I got the mouse to work I was then able to run Xconfigurator. Once Xconfigurator was finished I had a working X.
I then took the XF86Config file and placed it in Debian. However, it did not work. After several trial and errors, I finally got it to work. I took the Yellow Dog XF86Config file and changed the fonts to match the Debian's XF86Config fonts. Then I took /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_FBDev from the Yellow Dog partition and replaced the debian's XF86_FBDev server with it. After doing this, X worked on Debian. I suppose that if I would have recompiled the XF86_FBDev server it would have worked. However, I was not aware that the server was the problem. If you like I could e-mail you my XF86Config file and the server XF86_FBDev (gzipped down to 996k). I dare not attach it to this list because I don't think that would be appropriate. Let me know and I would be glade to send you those files. Sincerely, Jaime C.
