Didier, I'll investigate why the 1.7 git branch isn't tracking the svn branch. Per the roadmap page, you should expect 1.7.x releases every 6-8 weeks until 2.0 is final.
As for 2.0, I hope to start beta releases in a few months, with a release before October. That sounds like 2.0 will meet your deadline for Debian...
