The good news about Debian and Linux operating systems in general is that the newer versions don't tend to come with significantly increased hardware demands. As long as your system is 64-bit, I would install the latest stable version of Debian. It's possible that some of the heavier-weight desktop environments might be a bit slow (although I doubt even that), but even if so, I would still recommend the latest Debian release with a different desktop environment. For future reference, this sort of question is probably better suited for the debian-user mailing list. There are more people there who can help with user questions and tips.
