They don't conflict. And DocBook XML 4.1 appears to be compatible with DocBk XML 3.1.7 -- all my 3.1.7 files have validated under 4.1 (so far). Why not package them together as is done with the SGML versions? The Simplified XML version 4.0.1 would be a nice addition to such a package, too. If so, the catalog bug in the current docbook-xml should probably get fixed: it puts 3.1.3 in the system catalog instead of 3.1.7. Easy fix.
