You've got no choice on some non-sun4u's. Some of the machines are limited to booting from the first 2GB of a disk, and most are limited to just one GB. The Ultra's have no such limitation... but if you want to use a > 1 or 2GB disk on a SPARC, it'll work up until the first time you put a kernel after that border line.
