Update: have run a boot diagnostic (STOP-D) and reset the NVRAM defaults
(STOP-N). At least the symptons have changed, as I now get nothing at all
unless one of those keys is held at boot. When they are, they perform as
expected, then the RAM inits, then it halts as before.

Very very frustrating.
