I've just had a similar problem on an SS20 (default video); the only colour depth that worked was 32, which isn't one of the options given in the xserver-xfree86 configuration dialogues. (For the benefit of anyone who doesn't know his way around XF86Config files, go to Section "Screen", change DefaultDepth to 32, and add a SubSection "Display" with Depth 32.)
