OK, well, since it's easier to upgrade libc6 than it is to downgrade to stable, that's what I tried, and it did seem to fix the problem. Sounds like it's time for a bug report on libc6 2.3.1-16.

You might try libc6 2.3.2-1 before filing a bug report. Just to save
some folks some time.

That's what I installed (it is in unstable now, apparently, or at least apt thought so). Seems to work OK -- at least, grep works and I can boot without incident. :) I hadn't noticed any other program triggering the particular issue in libc.
