The sshd daemon fails to start if /dev/null is a regular file. You can start sshd in debug mode (sshd -d) but when you try to start it normally it fails to go to background. The program logs the following error: daemon() failed: Success This is a missleading report. I know that /dev/null should be a device and I don't know how it became a regular file, but the daemon shouldn't be affected or at least provide a better description of the problem. I spent hours to solve it and I found that this problem is more or less common just look for: sshd daemon failed Success using Google.
