PROBLEMA
O Debian Sarge n�o era carregado, a carga era interrompida e o LILO exibia as letras LI no canto superior esquerdo da tela. Infelizmente o notebook onde isto ocorreu n�o dispunha de unidade de disquete, por isto n�o foi criado um disquete de recupera��o durante a instala��o.
DIAGN�STICO O LILO foi corrompido por algum motivo e precisava ser reinstalado.
S� pra esclarecer, o lilo n�o foi corrompido. De acordo com a man page:
The boot process takes place in two stages. The first stage loader is a single sector, and is loaded by the BIOS or by the loader in the MBR. It loads the multi-sec� tor second stage loader, but is very space limited. When the first stage loader gets control, it types the letter "L"; when it is ready to transfer control to the second stage loader it types the letter "I".

When the second stage loader has received control from the first stage, it prints the letter "L", and when it has initialized itself, including verifying the "Descriptor Table" - the list of kernels/others to boot - it will print the letter "O", to form the full word "LILO", in uppercase.
Ele n�o conseguiu carregar o 'second stage', que reside na parti��o linux. Pelo que aprendi aqui na lista, o LILO aponta pra um endere�o 'fisico' do seu HD, e portanto vc deve ter mexido em alguma coisa no seu linux, movendo-a (e n�o executou o lilo pra atualizar isso) Isso inclui mudar o numero da parti��o.
Outro caso � qdo o arquivo do kernel ou a parti��o estiver acima do setor 1024 em BIOS antigas.
