Greetings Michael: Good points. If you hadn't mentioned it here, I would not likely have given much thought to the situation. Seems like there must be some non-amateur GPS software out there. I would even look into possible GPS/Amateur radio apps. I doubt you need the radio side, but perhaps the GPS side could be worth while. Then again, how open are maps? I have only tinkered lightly with GPS's and data ports to run APRS mobile.
